At Rangoli Academy, our Carnatic vocal program is designed to introduce students to Carnatic music in a structured, joyful, and meaningful way. The curriculum focuses on building both musical skill and cultural understanding through structured lessons and guided practice. The students will move from Levels 1 through 10 and as we evaluate progress at each level, we will determine the child’s readiness for a formal Indian Classical Music Certification.

Along the way, they develop the following abilities:

Strong Musical Foundations

  • Understanding of sruti (pitch) and laya (rhythm)
  • Voice training for pitch accuracy, breath control, and clarity
  • Development of attentive listening and musical discipline

Core Carnatic Music Concepts

  • Practice of sarali varisais, jantai varisais, and alankaras
  • Introduction to raga and tala frameworks
  • Learning traditional compositions such as geethams, varnams, and kritis

Rhythm and Musical Structure

  • Recognition and practice of common tala cycles
  • Developing a natural sense of rhythmic timing and coordination
  • Singing compositions within correct rhythmic patterns

Expression and Musical Creativity

  • Understanding the meaning and emotion behind compositions
  • Exposure to elements of manodharma (improvisation) such as simple raga exploration
  • Building confidence to sing with expression and musicality

Performance and Confidence

  • Opportunities to perform in annual events and community events
  • Learning stage presence and audience engagement
  • Developing confidence through practice and presentation
